The University Star, also called The Star, is the student-run news organization at Texas State University and one of the oldest publications in the state. The Star provides news and information on issues affecting the university, as well as the San Marcos community.

About the Sports Section 

The Star’s sports section assists in game coverage of a variety of Texas State Athletics sports teams and also works to produce in-depth, human-interest feature stories on student-athletes, coaches, alumni, etc. 



The University Star’s sports editor is expected to produce meaningful stories centered around Texas State and other San Marcos based sporting events and athletes. Our ideal candidate has a strong knowledge of Texas State sports teams, a passion for sports and excellent leadership skills. The sports editor will be responsible for maintaining a sports staff and produce three to five articles a week, in addition to game previews and recaps. The sports editor will assign live game coverage, work closely with sports staff to ensure all home games are covered and will have hire/disciplinary power over the section’s staff. The sports editor will receive a biweekly stipend of $275. 



  • Editorial 

    • Collaborate with multimedia section to assign photographers at local sporting events 

    • Required to copy edit all sports articles before submitting to EIC and meet deadlines set by EIC

    • Ensure all content meets the highest standards of journalistic ethics

  • Operational 

    • Must hold weekly meetings among sports staff

    • Must be present at editorial budget meetings every Friday at 11 a.m. 

    • Required to attend monthly all-staff meetings

    • Must be present on newspaper production day/night every Monday during the regular semester 

    • Maintain a professional relationship with Texas State Sports Information Directors

    • Assist with contest entries as needed

    • Assist with one outreach activity per semester



  • Must be a student at Texas State University with a GPA of at least 2.25 

  • Knowledgeable in AP style and sports journalism
