Arthur Fairchild is the editor-in-chief at The University Star and has been with the organization since fall 2019. As editor-in-chief, Arthur oversees The Star’s operations and serves as a resource for all of the organization’s staff members. Throughout his time at The Star’s, Arthur has worked as news reporter and news editor. In these roles, Arthur has strived to serve the community around him through producing meaningful and relevant content ranging from breaking news to feature stories. Arthur is currently a senior majoring in journalism and mass communications with a minor in history. When he is not in the newsroom you can find him spending time at the river or watching movies.
Sarah Hernandez is the managing editor at The University Star and has been with the organization since the summer of 2020. As managing editor, Sarah manages all content for The Star’s, assists the editor-in-chief in copyediting articles and serves as a resource for members of the editorial board. Prior to becoming managing editor, Sarah held the positions of life and arts editor, assistant life and arts editor and life and arts reporter. Throughout her time in the life and arts section, she covered topics such as student life, accomplished alumni, the local art community and San Marcos culture. She has a passion for editing stories and ensuring the content she puts out contains meaningful storytelling that will inspire The Star’s readers. Sarah is currently a senior majoring in journalism with a minor in Latino/a Studies. When she’s not in the newsroom, you can find her watching The Office, FaceTiming her family or ordering a bagel at Dunkin’ Donuts.
Meadow Chase is the engagement editor at The University Star and has been with the organization since spring 2021. As engagement editor, Meadow creates weekly newsletters, manages social media accounts and directs the engagement staff. Before that, she held the positions of assistant engagement editor and engagement specialist. Meadow is a rising junior journalism major with a concentration in digital media and a minor in fashion merchandising. When she isn't making a post, you can find Meadow drinking coffee, listening to Ariana Grande or reading Vogue.
Life & Arts Editor
Marisa Nunez is the life and arts editor at The University Star and has been with the organization since October 2021. As the life and arts editor, Marisa manages the life and arts staff and edits all life and arts stories for the weekly print issue of The University Star. Before becoming life and arts editor, Marisa was a life and arts reporter and contributor and wrote human interest stories pertaining Texas State students and the San Marcos community. Marisa is currently a sophomore majoring in Electronic Media with a minor in writing. When Marisa isn’t editing or writing at The Star, she enjoys taking dance classes, watching movies, thrifting, and writing songs.
Vanessa Buentello is the multimedia editor at The University Star and has been with The Star’s since fall 2020. As the multimedia editor, Vanessa manages the multimedia staff, assigns multimedia stories to her team of reporters, oversees multimedia projects, and leads the multimedia staff in creating various forms of content such as photos, video and audio. Before becoming the multimedia editor, Vanessa served as a life and arts reporter, multimedia reporter and as the assistant multimedia editor for The Star’s. Vanessa is a senior majoring in public relations and mass communication with a concentration in digital media and a minor in psychology. One of Vanessa’s favorite things in the world is storytelling and using her camera as an advantage to capture narratives through her lens. She found her biggest love in sports photography and has since gone on to intern with Texas State Athletics. When Vanessa isn’t taking pictures, she loves to spend her free time out in nature, sipping oat milk vanilla lattes and attending sporting events.
Monica Nicole Vargas
Digital Product Developer
Monica Nicole Vargas is the Digital Product Developer at The University Star. As the Digital Product Developer, Monica Nicole works alongside the Faculty Adviser, Editorial board to design and help maintain The University Star’s website and app. Her primary focus is on the design site aesthetics and maintaining the user experience on the website. Monica Nicole currently is a junior majoring in Advertising with a minor in Political Science and she is a certified Full Stack Web Developer. She also writes a fashion article for The University Star from all her experience and passion in the fashion world as a non-traditional student called Cat's Walk. For fun she loves hiking, making music, being outdoors, spoiling her husky, she absolutely enjoys helping people in her community, learning new languages and computer languages.
Public and Internal Relations Director
Elle Gangi is the public and internal relations director at The University Star and has been with The Star since June 2021. As the public and internal relations director, Elle manages the public relations team and plans events that reflect the mission of The Star. She also works to improve The Star’s relationship with Texas State University and the San Marcos community through outreach and volunteer events. Before becoming director, Elle held roles as a public relations specialist and assistant public and internal relations director. She is currently a senior majoring in public relations and mass communications with a minor in sociology. When not in the newsroom, you can find her reading a good book, hunting for iced coffee, or playing tabletop games with her friends.
Kadence Cobb is the design editor at The University Star and has been with the organization since January 2022. As the design editor, Kadence manages the design staff and designs the weekly print issue of The Star that is distributed every Tuesday during the academic school year. Before becoming design editor, Kadence was a page designer for the design team. Additionally, Kadence is an opinions contributor for The Star. Kadence is currently a sophomore majoring in Journalism. When Kadence is not designing at The Star, she enjoys watching movies, spending time at the river, and writing poetry.
Nichaela Shaheen is the news editor at The University Star and has been with The Star since May 2022. In this role, she leads the news section to cover developing stories and give rise to events that encapsulate the heartbeat of San Marcos and Texas State University. She transferred to Texas State University from Del Mar College where she was the editor-in-chief of The Foghorn while earning her associates degree in public relations and advertising. She is passionate about highlighting diverse stories and believes words are as powerful as we let them be. Nichaela is a junior majoring in mass communication and minoring in business administration. When she is not covering breaking news or in the newsroom, Nichaela can be found enjoying a cup of tea, painting or exploring San Marcos.
Dillon Strine is the opinion editor at The The University Star and has been with The Star since fall 2021. As the opinion editor, Dillon edits all opinions content along with researching and assigning stories to his section’s contributors. Additionally, Dillon is a sports contributor for The Star. Dillon began his college career at Northeast Lakeview College in San Antonio before transferring to Texas State in the fall of 2020. He is currently a senior majoring in journalism and minoring in media studies. When he is not contributing to The Star, Dillon can be found watching the New York Knicks or New York Yankees, his favorite sports teams.
Carson Weaver is the sports editor at the The University Star and has been with the organization since October of 2021. As sports editor, Carson manages the sports staff, assigns games and stories to staff and covers Texas State sporting events. Before holding the position of sports editor, Carson was a sports contributor for the Star where he enjoyed writing interesting feature stories and game recaps. Carson is a senior at Texas State with a major in mass communications and a minor in music. When he's not covering a baseball game, Carson can be found playing his guitar, DJ'ing at local venues or watching the 2017 World Series Champion Houston Astros.
Carly Koon is the podcast editor at The University Star and has been with the Star since the summer of 2021. As the podcast editor, Carly edits the podcasts and assists her team in creating well-rounded and entertaining content. Before becoming the podcast editor, Carly worked as a podcast contributor, in which she pitched ideas and appeared in podcasts for The Star. Carly is currently a senior majoring in psychology with a minor in honors studies. When she is isn’t editing podcasts, you can find her hiking with friends, cooking, or singing in her car.
