Meet the Staff

Brianna Benitez

Editor-in-Chief

Brianna Benitez is the editor-in-chief at The University Star and has been with the organization since fall 2018. As editor-in-chief, Brianna oversees The Star’s operations and serves as a resource for all of the organization’s staff members. Throughout her time at The Star, Brianna has worked as a life and arts reporter, assistant life and arts editor, life and arts editor and news editor. She also served as a project manager for The Star’s 11% Project. In these roles, Brianna has strived to serve the community around her through meaningful content ranging from human interest stories to breaking news. Brianna is currently a senior majoring in public relations and mass communications with a minor in pop culture. When she isn’t doing journalism, you can find her at brunch with friends, talking about Harry Styles or daydreaming about running her own fashion magazine.

 


Sarah Hernandez

Life and Arts Editor

Sarah Hernandez is the life and arts editor at The University Star and has been with The Star since the summer of 2020. As life and arts editor, Sarah copy edits all life and arts content, researches and assigns stories to her section’s reporters and collaborates with her team to write human interest stories that will inspire The Star’s readers. Prior to becoming life and arts editor, she held the positions of assistant life and arts editor and life and arts reporter. As a reporter, she covered topics such as student life, accomplished alumni and the local art community. Sarah is currently a junior majoring in journalism and mass communications with a minor in Latinx studies.

 

 

Meadow Chase

Assistant Engagement Editor

Meadow Chase is the assistant engagement editor at The University Star and has been with The Star since the Spring of 2021. As assistant engagement editor, Meadow works with the engagement editor to manage all social media accounts for The Star. She is currently a sophomore journalism major with a concentration in digital media and a minor in fashion merchandising.

 

 

Natalie Ryan

Multimedia Editor

Natalie Ryan is the multimedia editor at The University Star and has been with The Star since the spring of 2021. As multimedia editor, Natalie manages the multimedia staff, assigns multimedia stories to her team of reporters and oversees multimedia projects. Before that, Natalie served as a multimedia contributor. Natalie is a senior majoring in photography. When she isn't taking pictures, she's probably painting, reading, at a concert or drinking a Baja Blast.

 

 

Vanessa Buentello

Assistant Multimedia Editor

Vanessa Buentello is the assistant multimedia editor at The University Star and has been with The Star since fall 2020. As the assistant multimedia editor, Vanessa assists the multimedia editor with leading the multimedia team in creating various forms of content such as photo, video and audio. Before that, Vanessa served as a life and arts and multimedia contributor for The Star. She also worked as a social media contributor for KTSW 89.9 from summer 2020 to spring 2021. Vanessa is a junior majoring in public relations and mass communication with a concentration in digital media and is also minoring in psychology. When Vanessa isn’t taking pictures, she loves to spend her free time out in nature, hiking and traveling. She also loves reading, oat milk vanilla lattes and spending time with her closest friends.

 

 

Ronaldo A Amaya

Digital Product Developer

Ronaldo Amaya is the assistant digital product developer at The University Star. As the digital product developer, Ronaldo works alongside the Faculty Adviser, Student Publications coordinator and Editorial board to design and help maintain The University Star’s website and app. His primary focus is on the design site aesthetics and maintaining the user experience on the website.  Ronaldo began his college career at Texas State University in Fall 2018.  Currently he is a senior majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Mass Communications.

 

Nadia Gonzales

Public and Internal Relations Director

Nadia Gonzales is the public and internal relations director at The University Star and has been with The Star since August 2019. As the public and internal relations director, Nadia manages the public relations team and plans events that reflect the mission of The Star. She also works to improve The Star’s relationship with Texas State University and the San Marcos community through outreach and volunteer events. Before becoming director, Nadia held roles as a public relations assistant and assistant public and internal relations director. Nadia also contributes to The Star as an opinions columnist. She is currently a senior majoring in public relations and mass communications with a minor in latino/a studies.

 

 

Viviana Faz

Design Editor

Viviana Faz is the design editor at The University Star and has been with The Star since the spring of 2020. As design editor, Viviana manages the design staff and designs the weekly print issue of The Star that is distributed every Tuesday during the academic school year. Before becoming design editor, Viviana was a page designer for the design team. Viviana began her college career at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas before transferring to Texas State in the spring of 2020. She is currently a senior majoring in public relations with the concentration digital media with a minor in communication studies.

 

 

Madelyn Weirich

Assistant News Editor

Madelyn Weirich is the Assistant News Editor at The University Star and has worked with the organization since summer 2021. In this role, she collaborates with the news Editor to manage the news team, covers breaking news and produces thought-provoking, timely stories that provide insight on the community. Her passion lies in analyzing the political climate and telling the stories of people who’s voices tend to go unheard, and she’ll almost always follow a tip sent her way. Madelyn is a sophomore studying journalism and mass communication with a minor in Spanish and hopes to one day take her reporting skills abroad. When not in the newsroom, you can find her trying new restaurants in San Marcos, binge watching historical dramas or enjoying the beauty of our river. 

 

 

Dillon Strine

Opinion Editor

Dillon Strine is the opinion editor at The University Star and has been with The Star since fall 2021. As the opinion editor, Dillon edits all opinions content along with researching and assigning stories to his section’s contributors. Additionally, Dillon is a sports contributor for The Star. Dillon began his college career at Northeast Lakeview College in San Antonio before transferring to Texas State in the fall of 2020. He is currently a junior majoring in journalism and minoring in media studies. When he is not contributing to The Star, Dillon can be found watching the New York Knicks or New York Yankees, his favorite sports teams.

 

 

Arthur Fairchild

News Editor

Arthur Fairchild is the news editor at The University Star and has been with the Star since summer 2020. As news editor, Arthur manages the news staff, assigns current and timely stories to the news team and oversees all news related assignments. Arthur is also responsible for the coverage of weekly meetings of city officials and ensuring his team is writing quality stories that impact the community. As a reporter he covered stories involving crime, student life and human interest. Arthur is currently a junior majoring in journalism with a minor in history and plans to continue his career in journalism post university.

 

 

Carly Koon

Podcast Editor

Carly Koon is the podcast editor at The University Star and has been with the Star since the summer of 2021. As the podcast editor, Carly edits the podcasts and assists her team in creating well-rounded and entertaining content. Before becoming the podcast editor, Carly worked as a podcast contributor, in which she pitched ideas and appeared in podcasts for The Star. Carly is currently a senior majoring in psychology with a minor in honors studies. When she is isn’t editing podcasts, you can find her hiking with friends, cooking, or singing in her car.
