Meet the Staff

Jaden Edison

Editor-in-Chief

Jaden Edison is the editor-in-chief at The University Star and has been with The Star since the spring of 2018. As editor-in-chief, Jaden oversees and gives direction to the entire publication, makes final decisions and represents The Star at public gatherings. Before that, he held roles as a columnist, photojournalist, assistant multimedia editor and most recently multimedia editor. He has also contributed to different sections throughout his time. Throughout those experiences, Jaden has visually and aurally captured and written about everything San Marcos and Texas State-related, ranging from the annual Mermaid Promenade in downtown San Marcos to student protests in the Quad. He is currently a senior majoring in electronic media. When not doing journalism, Jaden is watching films, spending time with friends and family and debating who the greatest rapper of all time is.

 

Gabriella Ybarra

Managing Editor

Gabriella Ybarra is the managing editor at The University Star and has been with The Star since the fall of 2019. As managing editor, Gabriella manages all section staff members and oversees The Star’s editorial process. Before that, she worked as a news reporter in the news section where she covered student government and other local government and campus issues. Gabriella transferred to Texas State in the Fall of 2019 from Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, TX where she served as news editor for the student publication The Foghorn News. She is currently a senior and journalism and mass communication major with a minor in media studies.

 

Rebecca Harrell

Multimedia Editor

Rebecca Harrell is the multimedia editor at The University Star and has been with The Star since the summer of 2019. As multimedia editor, Rebecca manages the multimedia staff and assigns multimedia stories to her team of reporters. Before that, Rebecca served as the assistant multimedia editor and as a multimedia reporter where she produced photo galleries, audio stories and video projects covering various topics as well as weekly video content for The Star’s social media. Rebecca is a senior majoring in journalism and mass communication with a minor in English.

 

Daniel Weeks

News Editor

Daniel Weeks is the news editor at The University Starand has been with The Star since the fall of 2019. As news editor, Daniel copy edits all news content, manages the news staff and assigns news stories created by his team of reporters, fellow staff members and contributors. Before becoming news editor, Daniel served as the assistant news editor and as a news reporter. He is currently a junior majoring in journalism and mass communication with a minor in English. He is also an avid coffee drinker and dedicated fan of reality television.

 

Aidan Bea

Sports Editor

Aidan Bea is the sports editor at The University Star and has been with The Star since the fall of 2019. As sports editor, Aidan copy edits all section content, manages the sports staff and seeks out sports news related to Texas State. Before becoming sports editor, Aidan was a sports reporter specializing in basketball coverage. Aidan is currently a senior majoring in digital media innovation with a minor in media studies.

 

Laura Nunez

Opinion Editor 

Laura Nunez is the opinions editor at The University Starand has been with The Star since the spring of 2019. As the opinions editor, Laura works diligently to inspire her staff to stay informed, opinionated and driven. She approves and copy edits all section content, ensuring that columns and letters represent a diverse variety of opinions and meet journalistic standards. Before becoming editor of the section, she worked as a columnist with an interest on topics like mental health, societal norms, environmental efforts, campus safety and other campus issues. Laura is currently a senior majoring in advertising with a minor in forensic psychology.

 

Brianna Benitez

Life and Arts Editor

Brianna Benitez is the life and arts editor at The University Star and has been with The Star since the fall of 2018. As life and arts editor, Brianna copy edits all life and arts content, manages the life and arts staff and collaborates with her team to develop fresh, creative and relevant human interest stories. Prior to her role as life and arts editor, Brianna served as the assistant life and arts editor as well as a life and arts reporter where she reported on topics such as student life, fine arts and features. She is currently a junior majoring in public relations with a minor in pop culture.

 

Morgan Byers

Digital Product Developer

Morgan Byers is the digital product developer at The University Star and has been with The Star since the spring of 2019. As the digital product developer, Morgan works closely with the faculty adviser, student publications coordinator and editorial board to design and maintain The Star’s website and app. Her primary focus is on the front-end design and functionality of the website. Morgan began her college career at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Tx before transferring to Texas State in the Fall of 2018. She is currently a senior majoring in computer science and mathematics.

 

Haley Brand

Engagement Editor

Haley Brand is the engagement editor at The University Star and has been with The Star since the fall of 2019. As engagement editor, Haley manages all social media for The Star and works in conjunction with the advertising department. This ranges from posting to Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to creating and sending out the newsletter each week. Before that, Haley was a multimedia reporter for the multimedia team. She is currently a sophomore and a public relations and mass communications major.

 

Amira Van Leeuwen

Assistant Opinion Editor 

Amira Van Leeuwen is the assistant opinions editor at The University Star and has been with The Star since the fall of 2019. As the assistant opinions editor, Amira copy edits opinion content and assists in managing opinion staff. Before that, she worked as an opinion columnist where she wrote columns related to Texas State students and Texas policies. Amira began attending Texas State in the Fall of 2019 after graduating high school from Medina Valley in Castroville, TX where she served as yearbook editor for the student publication The Panther. Amira is currently a sophomore majoring in journalism and mass communication with a minor in political communication.

 

Bianca Landry

Public Relations Director

Bianca Landry is the public relations director at The University Star and has been with The Star since the summer of 2019. As the public relations director, Bianca manages the public relations team and plans events that reflect positively on The Star and improve our relationship with both Texas State and the local community. Before that, Bianca served as a public relations assistant. Bianca is currently a senior majoring in anthropology and political science with a minor in sociology.

 

Molly Gonzales

Design Editor

Molly Gonzales is the design editor for The University Star and has been with The Star since the fall of 2018. As design editor, Molly manages the design staff and designs the weekly print issue of The Star that is distributed every Tuesday. She is currently a junior and digital media innovation major with a minor in fashion merchandising.

Texas State baseball (15-23 overall, 5-7 Sun Belt) is set to face the Arkansas State University Red Wolves (10-20 overall, 5-7 Sun Belt) in a three-game series from April 23-25.

Texas State softball (27-9 overall, 9-5 Sun Belt) will host the Georgia Southern University Eagles (11-22 overall, 3-11 Sun Belt) from April 24-25 in a three-game series.
